Product key entered is invalid



Product keys are uniquely created based on your license requirements. The Invalid Product Key message most often occurs for the following reasons:

  • During copy and paste, an extra space or character is included. You may also want to replace all the "-" keys between the characters manually with "-" from your keyboard. Whenever the license key is copied from the invoice, it copies a different character that looks just like "-".

  • You have an older version of Office Timeline installed but are trying to use a newer key.


When product keys are generated, they are optimized for current versions of Office Timeline. Please make sure you have the latest version before following these steps. Download the latest version.


    1. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the Office Timeline tab.

    2. Click on the Upgrade button.

    3. In the What would you like to do dialogue, click on Activate.what-would-you-like-to-do.png

    4. Open your Office Timeline invoice to ensure your license key is the correct one.  Alternative validation: Log into your Office Timeline account at and navigate to the Subscriptions tab to locate your key.

    5. Copy your product key from your invoice or your account, taking care not to include extra spaces or characters.

    6. Paste the product key into the Activate dialog box.

    7. Click Activate.

    8. Close PowerPoint.

    9. Uninstall Office Timeline. In Windows, navigate to the Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office Timeline from the list and click Uninstall.

    10. Download and install the most current version of Office Timeline from

    11. Once Office Timeline has been re-installed, click on the Office Timeline tab in PowerPoint and click on the Upgrade button.

    12. Follow the steps above to Activate Office Timeline.

    • A brief description of the error you are receiving.

    • Your complete product key.

    • The version of Office Timeline you have installed.  You can find the version number on the Office Timeline tab in PowerPoint by clicking Help > About.
