Error installing: "Setup has encountered an unexpected error"
Symptoms
When trying to install or update the Office Timeline Add-in, the installation fails and you get an error message that says “Setup has encountered an unexpected error.”
Overview
This issue typically occurs when a required component is missing or when an older installer is used. Office Timeline requires the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime and .NET Framework 4.8 to install correctly. In some cases, installation may also fail due to security restrictions or conflicts with older versions.
If you see this error while installing Office Timeline, ensure that you are using the latest installer. Errors related to older components (such as VSTO) usually indicate that an outdated installer is being used.
Solution
- Download the latest installer
Make sure you are using the most recent version of Office Timeline:
https://www.officetimeline.com/updates - Install required components (if prompted)
If you receive a message about missing components, install:
- Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime:

- .NET Framework 4.8 (if not already installed) -
Restart PowerPoint and verify installation
After installation, open PowerPoint and confirm that the Office Timeline tab appears in the ribbon. -
